What moved this week

The Indian equity market experienced a week of consolidation as the Nifty 50 grappled with resistance around the 23,900 level. After a strong upward trajectory in recent weeks, investors showed a tendency to book profits, particularly in segments that had seen significant gains. Global cues remained a primary driver, with hotter-than-expected US inflation data sparking fears of a prolonged hawkish stance from the Federal Reserve, impacting investor confidence globally. Domestically, August auto sales data provided a tailwind for the automotive sector, reporting healthy growth across most segments.

Mid-cap and small-cap indices, which had outperformed for several consecutive weeks, also witnessed some profit-taking but demonstrated underlying strength on dips. Banking and financial services sectors, particularly private banks, showed resilience, supported by positive credit growth outlooks and stable asset quality reports. While volatility was higher than the previous week, the market largely held crucial support levels, suggesting a potential for renewed momentum once global uncertainties subside or fresh positive triggers emerge.

Sector heatmap

The week's sector performance revealed a mixed bag. The Automotive sector emerged as the clear winner, buoyed by strong August sales figures and optimistic commentary from industry leaders regarding festive demand. Consumer Durables also performed well, indicating improving consumer sentiment ahead of the festive season. Conversely, the IT sector faced headwinds due to global growth concerns and rising bond yields in the US, leading to a degree of underperformance. Pharma also saw some profit-booking after its recent rally.

Financial services, particularly private sector banks, showed robust performance, benefiting from healthy credit off-take and an improving economic outlook. PSU banks, however, remained subdued. Energy and Metal sectors traded sideways, influenced by volatile commodity prices and global demand projections. Healthcare, while seeing some sectoral specific action, largely remained in a tight range, awaiting fresh catalysts.

FII vs DII

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net sellers this week, offloading approximately ₹6,500 crore from the Indian equity market. This outflow was primarily attributed to global risk-off sentiment, driven by concerns over inflation and interest rate trajectories in developed economies. The shift in FII sentiment underscores the sensitivity of emerging markets to global liquidity conditions and macro developments.

Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs), including mutual funds and insurance companies, continued to provide crucial support to the market, absorbing a significant portion of the FII selling. DIIs were net buyers to the tune of ₹7,200 crore, demonstrating their conviction in the long-term India growth story. This sustained domestic buying prevented a sharper correction in the market, highlighting the increasing maturity and depth of Indian institutional participation.

Next Week Outlook

Nifty is likely to find immediate support around 23,650 and resistance near 24,000. Key domestic data like August CPI inflation and Industrial Production (IIP) for July will be closely watched. Global market sentiment will be shaped by central bank commentaries and any fresh developments in commodity markets.
